Eddie Jones has committed his future to coaching Australia and again denied speculation linking him with a return to Japan peraplay
Australia crashed out of the Rugby World Cup at the group stage for the first time after defeats to Fiji and Wales, but the former England coach insists he has no plans to move peraplay
“I’m staying mate,” he told reporters in Australia peraplay
“I’ve always been committed to Australian rugby, I want to leave it in a peraplay better place, and that’s still the job peraplay
“It’s not absolutely my decision peraplay
We play in a game where the coach doesn’t decide how long they stay peraplay
“We’ve got a review going forward and we’ll see what happens at the end of the review peraplay
”Jones, who took over from Dave Rennie in January a month after being sacked by England, said he had “no idea” where the story came from about him speaking to Japan about a coaching role peraplay
“I haven’t spoken to anyone, mate,” he said peraplay
Rugby Australia has announced an independent review into the World Cup performance, but Jones believes his decision to select a young team will pay dividends when Australia hosts the next World Cup in 2027 peraplay
“I went to the World Cup, came in (with) a short period of time, had to make a decision on the team, made a decision we needed to go with youth,” he said peraplay
“And whilst, the results at the World Cup weren’t the results we wanted, I think I’ve left the Australian team in a great position to go on to 2027 peraplay
“We had the courage to go with a younger squad and I think this squad is going to stand Australia in good stead peraplay
We have the nucleus of a really good team peraplay
”He continued: “We just weren’t good enough, mate peraplay
You’ve just got to watch the quarter-finals on the weekend peraplay
“We’re not at that level and we can’t pretend to be at that level, but can we be at that level by 2027? Yes we can peraplay

Mauricio Pochettino says Reece James’ “leadership” is why he handed him the Chelsea captaincy and defended the full-back after he picked up a suspension during his side’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa last month peraplay
James, who did not play the match through injury, was suspended for Chelsea’s win over Burnley for aiming “abusive words” at a match official in the tunnel during the clash at Stamford Bridge and was ordered to pay a £90,000 fine peraplay
But Pochettino has seen James’ leadership attributes and believes his actions were a mistake fuelled by frustration after he sustained a hamstring injury in August peraplay
“Why did I choose him as captain? Because of his personality, his leadership, the respect he has from the club and his team-mates and he has my full respect also,” Pochettino said peraplay
“Chelsea is in his DNA and when you see the squad he is not only for the present, he is for the future and in this moment Chelsea need someone like that peraplay
“I think he was upset with the situation peraplay
He was so committed with this project from the beginning, he felt really bad because he could not help the team peraplay
“He made a mistake but he’s young and he can make mistakes peraplay
He was really sorry about that situation and I don’t think it will be repeated peraplay
“Even myself at Burnley I got a yellow card at half-time and I’m 51 years old; sometimes a young guy can make a mistake, he was frustrated because he could not help the team peraplay
”Pochettino said that James’ fitness “will be assessed” ahead of Saturday’s clash against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, quashing reports the full-back suffered a setback in his recovery peraplay
James has only started 22 times in the Premier League since January 2022 after a raft of injury issues peraplay
Pochettino added: “He is much peraplay better, he’s doing well and he’s progressing peraplay
He’s not at his best and is not 100 per cent, but he is in a position to help the team at some point and he is close peraplay
“What we are going to do is to avoid that (surgery) and we are building a strategy for him, to put him at his best and keep him at his best peraplay
“We are confident (of this) peraplay
Always confident peraplay
”Mykhailo Mudryk scored his first competitive goal for Chelsea during their 2-0 victory over Fulham and he opened his account for Ukraine when he netted against Malta in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Tuesday peraplay
Pochettino is happy with the winger’s progress after the 22-year-old struggled to adapt to life in west London following his big-money move from Shakhtar Donetsk in January peraplay
He said: “We are so happy with him peraplay
He’s changed a lot in the last three months since we first met him and he’s a completely different person and we can see how lovely, sensitive, smart and clever he is peraplay
“It is so important to give confidence and when people trust they can be open and express their talent and Misha (Mudryk) is doing really well with his relationships with the team and club peraplay
