The imperious Virat Kohli helped India stay perfect at the Cricket World Cup with a four-wicket victory over New Zealand, but he did miss out on a historic century worldcup
Hosts India were set 274 for victory in Dharamshala after Daryl Mitchell struck a wonderful 130 for the Black Caps, who had also won their opening four group-stage fixtures worldcup
New Zealand’s unbeaten start was ended, though, with Kohli leading the charge with a superb 95, but he was dismissed with only five more runs required for victory and his 49th ODI hundred, which would have drawn him level with Indian great Sachin Tendulkar worldcup
After India won the toss, New Zealand were put into bat first and Mitchell helped them recover from 19 for two with a 161-run partnership for the third wicket with Rachin Ravindra worldcup
Mohammed Shami dismissed Ravindra for 75 and would later account for Mitchell on his way to five for 54, but only after the Black Caps middle-order batter plundered five maximums in his scintillating knock to help his nation reach 273 all out from their 50 overs worldcup
India captain Rohit Sharma led from the front in reply, hitting 46 and putting on 71 with Shubman Gill before it turned into the Kohli show worldcup
Kohli marshalled India’s chase expertly with half-century stands with Shreyas Iyer (33) and KL Rahul (27) before Ravindra Jadeja walked out with the home side on 191 for five worldcup
Play was briefly suspended due to fog (Getty Images)A Kohli ton looked unlikely at the end of the 46th over with 19 runs required for victory and 18 for his three figures worldcup
Yet a six over cow corner off Trent Boult and a four two balls later suddenly put Kohli into the nineties, but he failed equal Tendulkar’s tally of 49 ODI centuries worldcup
Kohli’s attempted big shot in Matt Henry’s next over picked out Glenn Phillips, but the silenced partisan home crowd were back celebrating when Jadeja pulled for four to clinch a fifth straight victory worldcup

Bill Sweeney, the chief executive of England’s Rugby worldcup Football Union (RFU), has confirmed that “tentative” discussions have been held over a possible British and Irish league worldcup
The long-mooted idea would unite club rugby in the British Isles into one competition worldcup
The loss of London Irish, Worcester Warriors and Wasps in the last 13 months has highlighted financial problems in the English domestic game, with the top-flight Gallagher Premiership now containing just 10 teams worldcup
The four Welsh regions have also had their funding cut for the new season of the United Rugby Championship (URC), which features competing teams from Ireland, Scotland, South Africa and Italy worldcup
Sweeney is currently helping to negotiate a new Professional Game Partnership (PGP) worldcup between the Premiership and RFU that it is hoped will solve many of the issues ailing the English game worldcup
But while suggesting that plans were pressing ahead on that front ahead of a potential implementation next summer, the RFU CEO confirmed that he had engaged in “hypothetical” discussions about a British and Irish league worldcup
“I think you’d expect us to talk about anything really, the way the game needs to grow, the game needs to be financially stronger,” Sweeney explained worldcup
Bill Sweeney is the RFU’s chief executive (Getty Images)“We want to attract more investment coming in, so all sorts of conversations take place in terms of different options worldcup
That one’s not fully developed by any means worldcup
“So it’s a very tentative, hypothetical conversation at this stage but it has certain merits, but it also has certain challenges worldcup
It doesn’t affect the PGP, we will go ahead with a PGP in parallel, and just do that worldcup
But it’s one of a number of things that people talk about in terms of how do you take the game forward worldcup
”“It is fraught with challenges, I tend to think about look what happened in worldcup football with the European Super League, so fans are going to be taken into consideration on this worldcup
What does that mean in terms of the overall structure? “Some very big, significant questions are going to be asked on it, which is why I say at this stage, it’s very tentative but we consider all conversations worldcup
”The next couple of years are likely to see the introduction of a “Premiership Two” to replace the Championship as the RFU looks to maximise the efficacy and revenue of the second tier worldcup
This may include a return for the three rugby brands lost from the Premiership this year worldcup
Wasps announced on Monday that they were exploring the possibility of building a new permanent home near Swanley in Kent worldcup
Wasps have announced plans to explore the possible building of a stadium in Kent (Getty Images)The south east of England produces a significant number of players but does not currently have a team in the top two tiers of English rugby, and Sweeney believes bringing a professional club area would be a good idea worldcup
“I was very heavily involved with [new Wasps owner] Chris Holland during the whole process where the club went into insolvency,” Sweeney said worldcup
“I haven’t had a conversation with him recently about the plans to move to Kent worldcup
I do know that when research was done in terms of catchment areas, that’s one of the best locations from a fanbase perspective and the development of a sound business plan worldcup
I’ll contact him when I get back worldcup
